March 2004

To alleviate poverty, to protect the environment and to build global peace

The Year That Was 2003

The year 2003 was an eventful one for World Corps India, which also marked WCI's second year of work in Kuppam Constituency, Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh. In continuation with its mission to alleviate information poverty and provide employment to the rural youth, WCI had accomplished the following:

  • Facilitation of three youth-owned Community Information Centres in partnership with Hewlett Packard at the gram panchayat (village) level in Kuppam.
  • Processes for market linkages between Kuppam based women Self Help Groups engaged in the manufacturing of incense sticks (agarbathis) and a Bangalore based private company, Sri Traders.
  • Job placement services for Kuppam youth in cities such as Chennai and Bangalore as security personnel.
  • A Rendezvous with His Excellency Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Hon'ble President of India by WCI staff who briefed him about WCI's activities in June 2003 at Kuppam Constituency.
  • Acknowledgement by The Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP), Malaysia for World Corps India's CIC model as a Best Practice Strategy under the Youth and ICT category and an invitation for a WCI staff to participate in its Global Youth Leadership Conference in Melaka, Malaysia, in June 2003.
  • WCI's collaboration and assistance to other like-minded organizations like the Grameen Technology Centre, which has initiated an Information Kiosk Project in partnership with Association of Social Alternatives (ASA) and Drishtee in Trichy District in the state of Tamil Nadu.
  • Meeting and gathering of World Corps Country Coordinators representing Kenya, Philippines, Mexico and India in September 2003 in Seattle to chalk out strategic plans for World Corps's expansion over the next few years.

During 2003, a few of WCI's staff - Pavan, Ravi and Gowrisankar based in the Kuppam Project Office moved on to other jobs and new staff members Jyothendra, Jaiganesh, Murali Krishna, Subramanyam and Parthasaradhy joined the Kuppam Project Office.

World Corps India looks ahead and forward to 2004 with the hope of newer collaborations with as many like minded individuals and organizations from around the world in the hope of reaching more number of rural youth who are with a dream and who could fulfill their dreams with a little intervention from us.

We take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your encouragement and best wishes during 2003 and hope for your continued support for another successful and fruitful year ahead.
