To alleviate poverty, to protect the environment and to build global peace

Digital Photography at CICs

Digital photography has reached India’s villages and is here to stay. Thanks to a special effort by HP I Community Project, the Community Information Centres are now equipped with digital cameras. These cameras as in any other normal photo studios are used on a fee for service basis by CIC entrepreneurs who have not even held a normal camera that required loading of films. They have begun their careers as rural photographers with digital cameras and have much to offer to the people of their villages. Be it a school photo, a passport size photo, a wedding photo or a scenic view of the country side the digital camera services of the CICs are in very good demand in the villages of Kuppam region.

HP I-Community, gave an HP digital camera and a photo printer to the 13 CIC entrepreneurs in Kuppam Constituency in October 2004. HP provided the hands on training to the CIC entrepreneurs and are providing the printer cartridges and the photo papers. With the camera the entrepreneurs are able to take a picture and print them within 2-3 minutes.

These entrepreneurs do not just take passport and maxi size photos but creatively use software for converting black and white photos to color photos and are placing their customers’ images virtually besides their favorite film stars Chiranjeevi (a popular Telugu film hero), sports icons and monuments like the Taj Mahal. These virtual images enthrall the customers who are very much happy in seeing their images juxtaposed to favourite heroes and places. After all, pictures do speak louder than words.
